Ontario Fire Code Updates

The CO (Carbon Monoxide) rules are changing as of January 1, 2026.

CO Alarms in Care Occupancies

Ontario fire code currently requires CO alarms in care occupancy suites that contain a fuel-burning appliance (FBA), and in rooms that are above, below, or beside a garage or a service room with an FBA. CO Alarms are also required adjacent to each sleeping area (near all bedrooms) and in service rooms that contain an FBA.

NEW: Effective January 1st, 2026

CO alarms are also required:

  • If the suite is heated by air coming from a fuel-burning appliance (FBA) that is not in the suite
  • On every storey of the suite, including those with no sleeping areas

NEW: Effective January 1st, 2026

CO alarms are also required:

  • If the suite is heated by air coming from a fuel-burning appliance (FBA) that is not in the suite
  • On every storey of the suite, including those with no sleeping areas
