Ontario Fire Code Updates
The CO (Carbon Monoxide) rules are changing as of January 1, 2026.
CO Alarms in Care Occupancies
Ontario fire code currently requires CO alarms in care occupancy suites that contain a fuel-burning appliance (FBA), and in rooms that are above, below, or beside a garage or a service room with an FBA. CO Alarms are also required adjacent to each sleeping area (near all bedrooms) and in service rooms that contain an FBA.
NEW: Effective January 1st, 2026
CO alarms are also required:
- If the suite is heated by air coming from a fuel-burning appliance (FBA) that is not in the suite
- On every storey of the suite, including those with no sleeping areas

CO Alarms in Residential Occupancies
Ontario fire code currently requires CO alarms in multi-unit residential occupancies—like apartments, condos, retirement home, hotels, motels, and dorms—that contain a fuel-burning appliance (FBA). CO Alarms are also required in rooms that are above, below, or beside a service room with an FBA or a garage, adjacent to each sleeping area (near all bedrooms) and in service rooms that contain an FBA.
NEW: Effective January 1st, 2026
CO alarms are also required:
- If the suite is heated by air coming from a fuel-burning appliance (FBA) that is not in the suite
- On every storey of the suite, including those with no sleeping areas
- In public corridors of residential suites that are heated by FBAs
